Learn to mentor the next generation of ICF credentialed coaches.

The Vanguard XXI AAMC Course prepares experienced, credentialed coaches to serve as effective ICF Mentor Coaches. Over 13 weeks, you will build the skill of observing another coach, calibrating against ICF standards, and giving developmental feedback that helps them grow.


The course provides 62 hours of mentor coach specific education, designed to the ICF Mentor Coaching Competencies and taught entirely online by two ICF Master Certified Coaches.


This course is for experienced ICF credentialed coaches who want to mentor others toward their ACC, PCC, or MCC credential, as well as leaders building internal coaching programs and coach educators who want a structured, competency based approach to developing other coaches. AAMC Course Faculty

Dr. Phil McKinney II, Executive and Mentor Coach at Vanguard XXI

Dr. Phil McKinney II has spent over 30 years in ministry, higher education, and leadership, working in discipleship, family ministry, coaching, leadership development, spiritual direction, and pastoral counseling. He is an ICF Master Certified Coach (MCC) and life, leadership, executive, and mentor coach and is a certified practitioner of DISC, Motivators, EIQ, and Prepare/Enrich assessment tools. He holds four degrees (BA, MA, MACS, and PhD) and is a published author.

Kim Zovak

Kim Zovak is an experienced coach, trainer, and leadership consultant working globally with non-profit leaders and organizations. Her passion is helping leaders multiply their impact by reproducing more effective leaders and supporting organizations to build strong leadership development cultures that better achieve their goals. She holds an MCC credential with the International Coaching Federation and is a credentialing assessor, mentor coach, and coaching supervisor.

AAMC Course Hours

The AAMC Course is designed around the six ICF Mentor Coaching Competencies and provides 62 hours of mentor coach specific education over 13 weeks, all online.


Pre Work and Evaluation Tool Training: 12 hours, self paced

Core Mentor Coaching Curriculum: 16 hours, live

Calibration and Evaluation Training: 8 hours (6 live, 2 self paced)

Observed Mentor Coaching Sessions: 10 hours, live

Mentoring on Mentoring (Supervision): 5 hours, live

Triad Practice: 6 hours, self paced

Reflective Learning Portfolio: 2 hours, self paced

Final Capstone: 3 hours, live

Core Mentor Coaching Curriculum

Eight live modules on Zoom, each mapped to the ICF Core Competencies and the ICF Mentor Coaching Competencies (MC1 through MC6):

  • Observed Mentor Coaching:
    Five observed sessions, individual and group, with written faculty feedback anchored in the ICF Mentor Coaching Competencies.
  • Mentoring on Mentoring:
    Faculty led supervision focused on ethics, developmental decisions, calibration, and your growth as a mentor coach.
  • Triad Practice:
    Rotate through the mentor coach, coach, and observer roles, with observation notes, written feedback, and peer debriefing.
  • Evaluation Tool Training:
    Hands on training with PCC markers, BARS, scoring reliability, and calibration methodology.

Calibration and Capstone

Review recorded sessions, compare observations, and align your evaluations with ICF standards. The course closes with a reflective learning portfolio and a final capstone that includes a recorded mentor coaching session, faculty review, and a readiness determination.
